Unified Fitness: A 35-Day Exercise Program for Sustainable Health
Published in Paperback by Hampton Roads Pub Co (January, 2002)
Author: John Alton
Average review score:

Finally, a mind-body program with tangible results!
Unified Fitness is awesome! As a high stress, type "A" person, I've tried every mind-body practice out there: biofeedback, mindfulness-based meditation, yoga, etc. Unified Fitness is the only practice that has provided tangible results and real, lasting benefits. By combining traditional exercise with mind-body techniques that actually work, John Alton has created a program that resonates with those of us who are not completely comfortable with many of the new age or purely spirituality-based practices that one typically finds. It takes some effort and time, but the results are nothing short of astounding! Buy it, read it, practice it and you just might change your life.

Powerful integration of healing and contemplation
John Alton's Unified Fitness presents a powerful new practical vision of traditional Asian healing and contemplative practices. Working with an intimate knowledge of traditional Chinese practices, he has reformulated the entire system from the ground up based on its core principles to create a new process designed to suit contemporary lifestyles and realities. The book cuts through the difficulties of traditional presentations, as well as the superficiality of so many contemporary "manuals", to achieve a rare and powerful synthesis with potent results for personal physical and mental health. Despite being an associate Professor at the University of Virginia in Tibetan Buddhist Studies specializing in contemplative systems with many years of research in Tibet itself, I have seen few contemporary models so deeply based in Asian healing-contemplative traditions, and yet so precisely and powerfully reorganized for a contemporary audience. I highly recommend Unified Fitness.

Peace of mind and body
Mr. Alton does a commendable job of combining Eastern and Western medicinal philosophies, with easy-to-understand chapters and diagrams. I've been fortunate to live in Charlottesville and study with Mr. Alton. This book gives everyone not located in the Charlottesville area the opportunity to take advantage of "Unified Fitness". The system is easy to follow and well laid out in the book. The ultimate result does depend on the individual. "Unified Fitness" has to be incorporated into your life to obtain the most benefit.

"Unified Fitness" combines mind and body exercises that really work. Alton also touches on diet and coping with stress in the modern world in addition to examining the micro-biology of his program's effects. Mr. Alton has an extensive background in Qigong, Martial Arts, and Eastern/Western medicine. For someone who is looking for peace of mind and body, I couldn't recommend a better book for your overall health.

Winning Every Day : The Game Plan for Success
Published in Paperback by HarperBusiness (September, 1999)
Author: Lou Holtz
Average review score:

Life & Leadership Tips from a Master Motivator
Lou Holtz, currently the head football coach at the University of South Carolina, has written one of the best, and most enjoyable leadership books I have ever read. His game plan for success was largely told through his gridiron experiences, but this plan is about much more than just football-it is a proven, common-sense guide for succeeding in the game of life.

What makes Holtz's life and leadership insights so compelling and believable are his dynamic life experiences and his incredible list of accomplishments: parents were divorced; fiance' broke off their engagement, but they later married and remain so after 40 years; only coach to lead 4 different programs to top-20 finishes and 6 different programs to bowl games (William and Mary, N.C. State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame, South Carolina); 23 of 32 college teams he coached have received bowl bids, with 18 top-25 finishes, 8 top-10 finishes, and one undefeated national championship; 3rd winningest active coach and 7th place all-time with 243 victories; wife's heroic battle with throat cancer; fired or let go as assistant coach more than once; polled as the best motivational speaker in the country two years in a row, and his motivational video "Do Right!" is the all-time best-seller; guest speaker at most Fortune 500 companies; and was invited to the Oval Office by four different presidents.

Holtz's game plan consists of ten steps. Each step is explored in detail in its own chapter. The colorful, real-world stories and humorous anecdotes Holtz used to present the steps' lessons perfectly complemented his conversational writing style. The final chapter is considered the "end-zone" of success-where you can be if you have the courage, desire, and character to apply the lessons described within the plan's steps.

The book is jammed full of common-sense, spiritual, philosophical, and motivational life and leadership perspectives. The most memorable passages for me as a father, leader, and follower were Holtz's thoughts about discipline:

"For me, a disciplinarian is someone who requires that people understand the consequences of their decisions. You use discipline to reinforce choices. Our athletes and my children knew that if they chose to misbehave, they were also choosing to pay the consequences...In each case, I never punished anyone; the offenders chose the punishment themselves by their actions."

He illustrated his commitment to being a disciplinarian by describing the circumstances that led to him suspending his top three Arkansas players before the 1977 Orange Bowl (against Oklahoma), and to suspending two of his best players before his top-ranked Notre Dame team played the second-ranked University of Southern California in 1988:

"[They] recklessly violated our Do Right rule, which governs personal conduct...These were not bad guys; they simply made a bad decision...I didn't want the keys to our offense to miss our biggest game of the year, but when they decided to break our rules, they also decided to miss the game. Now I had to support that choice."

Holtz is a master motivator and a proven true winner in football and life. My highest recommendation for this book is best captured by Holtz himself when he wrote, "As you know, the only things that will change you from where you are today to where you want to be five years from now are the books you read and the people you meet." I hope I someday get a chance to meet Lou Holtz and thank him for his outstanding book on life and leadership.

Winning Every Day
I bought this book at Notre Dame when I was visiting my brother and it is a great book. Good thing I am a ND fan or I would have never found this book. I agree with everything Lou Holtz says in this book. I think it is all very true and makes good sense. It helps when he uses real life encounters as examples. I read all of the reviews inside the book from many celebrities who have found this book of great help. Lou Holtz can show you how you can win at anything you do, every day.

A winner of a book
A truly inspirational motivational book which has turned my attitude towards my career on its head. Mr Holtz' and Mr McKay's style is uncompromising and challenging - "If kissing a** was not a metaphor would you still do it to achieve your goal? If the answer is "No" toss this book in the trashcan now and go flip burgers." Drawing examples from notable "winners" from history the authors urge readers to harness their power and potential to achieve their dreams. Though I say so myself, Alexander the Great would have been "who da man?" as I nailed that paper towel distribution contract. I'll chalk that one up to "Winning Every Day" which I've certainly made part of my game plan for success in the public hygience product supply field.

Work and the Glory Vol 5 A Season of Joy (Work and the Glory)

The Work and the Glory
I have read all 9 books several times. With each reading, I not only pick up on things that I have missed before, but I come to a much better knowlegde of who I am, and the things I stand for. Althought the Steeds are a fictional family, everything that they experience is something that a pioneer family experienced. Gerald N Lund not only tells a fantastic story but he tells an historically correct story. My life is better for having read this series. I would recommend Fire of the Covenant, and his new series on the life of Christ. They will make you cry, laugh, and feel more than you can possibly imagine.

I love this series!
I love this series. I have read the first 4 books so far and my testimony of the Gospel has grown so much. I'm sixteen years old and I recommend this series to anyone and everyone, even if you aren't a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They are wonderful books and everyone should read them.

The Work and the Glory Volumes 1-4
I'm not one that enjoys reading at all! I got the itch to read the Work and the Glory. I only have the first 4 volumes. I COULD NOT put the book down! I read all 4 in one month, which is totally amazing to me! I felt like I was part of the Steed, Smith families, I cried and laughed, I really felt like I was one of them. It really makes you appreciate all they went through for us! Thank You Mr. Lund for opening a whole new world of reading for me.

Practical advice you can use immediately!
After devouring this book, I immediately passed it to a client who is developing a speaking business. Lenny's book is full of real-life examples and practical tips for communicating clearly and powerfully. Whether you want to speak professionally or just communicate better in your day-to-day life, this is the book for you!

This book is a gold mine! It provides a ton of practice, easy to understand and easy to implement ideas. Lenny's style of writing is so conversation. Reading the book is like having Lenny speak to you one-on-one. The information is easy to understand and simple to use and the entire book is an easy read.

Great job!

AN EASY WAY TO ELOQUENCE
Throat dry and raspy? Hands damp and clammy, perhaps even a little shaky? Don't worry, chances are you're not coming down with the flu but simply about to speak in public. Why the majority of us are rendered incapable when standing before a group of faces, even loving ones, is a mystery.

However, there is no mystery about the help for our podium petrification found in "10 Days To More Confident Public Speaking" by The Princeton Language Institute. After listening and practicing the useful tips found in this audio many will be almost as eloquent as reader Peter McHugh!

Listeners are shown how to be laid back, be comfortable with their own unique selves, and, of great importance, given insider tips on establishing an instant rapport with an audience. Suggestions as to how to integrate humor abound, as well as memorization techniques. Once a speaker knows the words he or she wants are firmly in mind, there is an added comfort and confidence.

Whether you going to be up before a local historical society or a judge, 10 DAYS TO MORE CONFIDENT PUBLIC SPEAKING is an invaluable aid.

31 Days of Praise by Ruth Myers
I loved this book so much I have made it a part of my daily devotions for the past year. I'm on my 13th reading and am still gleaning tidbits! It is a beautifully written and heartfelt guide to praising our Lord, in all circumstances. There is a section at the end called "Your Most Basic Act of Worship" that I read every day as a beautiful beginning to my day! I would suggest you buy more than one copy because I know you'll want to give copies to your friends! Enjoy! And God bless!

Incredibly helpful, simple and profound
My wife and I were given this book by a friend who had been struggling with depression, she said it was her "lifeline to sanity".

For us it has become part of our daily down time of tea and devotional reading. The prayers are nearly straight from the Bible but organized and expressed in such a way that they feed and elevate our souls. And the additonal writings about how to incorporate and enjoy praise in all of life is amazingly insightful and real.

At this moment I'm buying 10 more of these little gems to give as gifts to friends.

Tutorial on Praise
This great little book has enhanced my prayer life more than any other resource. I've used it repeatedly over the years to practice the art of praise and thereby heighten my personal prayer experience with God. I speak specifically of the 31 days section in which praise/prayers are suggested for each day.

The Alzheimer's Sourcebook for Care Givers: A Practical Guide for Getting Through the Day
Published in Hardcover by Lowell House (February, 1994)
Authors: Frena Gray Davidson and Frena Bloomfield
Average review score:

This Book Has The Answers You Are Looking For....
This is the book that changed everything for me. Its about approaching this disease with Love, Strength and Courage.
Frena shows you how to get thru a day at a time and most of all how to keep yourself intact. We get lost in this disease, it consumes whole families. She shows you how to listen, your loved one is still within this person afflicted by this disease, you just have to listen carefully and you will see the person you love is still inside and has alot to tell. She shows you how to cope. Frena is my strength, she gave me the tools from reading her book 3 years ago. This book is my foundation and Frena is an angel. No other book affected me as much as this one. If you want to truly understand this disease, this is it!

Great Learning Tool
For anyone with a loved one suffering with Alzheimer's this is the book to get. It will help you understand the disease and how to cope. Written in everyday language it is packed with information on the stages these victims go through and how you can help them. One of the best I've read!

A book that packs a powerful message about Love
This is a tremendous resource for people who believe in the healing power of Love. Frena Gray Davidson has written a very spiritually centered book that will inevitably help any caregiver and their loved one.

She speaks about how we'll see the "divine child" untouched by darkness or sickness - our loved one - emerge in this process. And she states that we must listen to the feeling behind the words. That little statement has changed my life. When someone asks for their mother, who may have passed on decades earlier, they're really seeking comfort and security and reassurance. We need to hear their feelings that lie in back of their words.

She goes on to say that 30% of language is verbal, the rest is expressed in body language and behavior.

Further on she makes the observation that Alzheimer's patients are sensitive to the thoughts of those around them and to always give plenty of Love, both in word, action and thought.

She states that "unconditional Love is not a measure, it is a flow. You cannot give it or get it, you can only be part of it. When you love a person with Alzheimers, clarity and awareness come to that person." [p149]

The other wonderful point she makes is that so much of our disappointment in Alzheimers patients is tied to our notion of their "proper" mortal identity. Your mother doesn't know she's your mother anymore, but you can value and cherish who she is in the here and now. Don't live in the past but nurture the childlike qualities she is expressing in the present.

Tons of good advice. The other book I'd recommend for anyone dealing with Alzheimers is "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures" by M. B. Eddy. It is a terrific sourcebook on powerful prayers that heal and restore. It is the "how-to" book of prayer.

Approaching Zion (The Collected Works of Hugh Nibley, Vol 9)
Published in Hardcover by Deseret Books (November, 1989)
Authors: Hugh Nibley and Don E. Norton
Average review score:

I don't give 5 stars very often...
This is definitely Nibley's best (and most caustic) work. Nibley, as a long-time employee of "the BYU", as he states it, educates Latter-day Saints in that which they need the most assistance: materialism and pride. I cannot give this volume enough praise in the short review allowed here. Start with chapter 2: "Zion, A Distant View", and you'll find passages like Matt. 6:24-34 coming alive and having greater application in your life. This book strays somewhat from Nibley's more critical or scholarly style employed in his other works, probably because he's trying so hard to help all people understand the dilemma in which the Latter-day Saints find themselves. Definitely pick this book up if you've been uncomfortable with the "standard" interpretations of what food storage means, or what worldliness means, or what working hard at your job is all about, etc.

Saints at their best and worst!
First of all, this book is geared to temple-endowed remembers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. So if you want a basic book, I recommend "The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ," or "Standing For Something," by Gordon B. Hinckley, the world-leader of the Church., or "A Marvelous Work and a Wonder," by LeGrand Richards, or "Our Search For Happiness," by M. Russell Ballard. These books are designed as introductory texts, and explain our history, an what our basic beliefs are, and why we build temples.

This book, however, is written by a member for members, and has a very cutting edge to it. It is a very sharp and repeated call to live after the manner of happiness, after the united order, or, in short, after the manner of Zion.

This book is a collection of samizdat discourses that circulated underground at Brigham Young University. Dr. Nibley has the academic freedom to speak rather bluntly on the current economic order of things. He is not a communist, or a capitalist, but a third party-a consecrationist. He believes in restoring the early Christian order of things that prevailed in the primitive church (See Acts 2:32-37)

This book shakes you to the core as Dr. Nibley drives a stake thought the heart of the vampire of greed and selfishness. It it not all attack, though. This book opens your mind to focus on the things test matter, the eternal things, the peaceable things of the gospel.

A Thought Provoker
I have read most of the published writings of Hugh Nibley and this book is my favorite. Drawing lessons from the past, Dr. Nibley shows us exactly how far we really are from the Zion ideal and what we must do to get there. And the changes required do not leave us in our comfort zone. A must read for any person truly wanting to reach a high spiritual plane. I would rate this book as one of the great classics in LDS literature. John Walsh, Editor, All About Mormons web site.

Awful Ogre's Awful Day
Published in Hardcover by Greenwillow (September, 2001)
Authors: Jack Prelutsky and Paul O. Zelinsky
Average review score:

Fun, Fun, Fun!
What a terrific, fun, lively book! As much fun for me and my husband to read as it is for our son to have it read to him. Even though he is still small, he loves the rhyming cadence of it and the pictures. A nice change from Dr. Seuss - I just love Awful Ogre! Especially when he dances...or courts a grrrrl...or goes out to dinner...

This book would be a terrific addition to any childs library.

Truly a Dream Team!
Fans of Prelutsky and fans of Zelinsky, rejoice! This devoutly-to-be-wished combination comes off just as well as you might imagine. It really does present a day in the life of a one-eyed ogre in poems and pictures. And by all means, read it out loud! It's so much more fun that way. My favorite -- "When elves and gnomes encounter me, / They often shriek, 'Grotesque!' / I bow with magnanimity / And murmur, 'Statuesque!' " And the pictures! There are a lot of things going on in the four-color pictures. And kids will have fun finding them all! Some of the language is hilariously gross and disgusting -- and not for the squeamish! Prelutsky obviously has always loved the sound of words -- and big ones, at that. And as always, he doesn't write DOWN to kids. There is a glorious perfection in his rhythms. Kids will love to grimace and wince along with the gory subject matter. This book is so much fun!

An Awfully Exciting Adventure...
Jack Prelutsky, author of more than 30 artistic creations, takes the reader on a journey through the daily rituals of an ogre's pleasantly gross life. Prelutsky describes all of the ogre's activities from sunrise, when his pet rattlesnake wakes him, until late into the night, when he has a nightmare about a beautifully tranquil place. Using fabulous double-page spreads, Zelinsky illustrates how the ogre enjoys a violent storm, tends to his garden of carnivorous roses and overblown mold and takes supper at a local restaurant where his titanic appetite is satisfied with triple helpings of everything (including the silverware, plates and tablecloth). The 18 rhythmic and witty verses are brought to life with remarkable detail using watercolor and pen and ink. This combination of gruesome humor, along with the realistic snapshots of the ogre's life, will provide many hours of entertainment and enjoyment to all those who are ready to experience the adventure. Everyone will fall in love with this oversized and grotesque, but playful, ogre as they scour each marvelous and explosive work of art! (Ages 6 and older)

The Beatles: After the Break-Up 1970-2000: A Day-By-Day Diary
Published in Hardcover by Omnibus Press (December, 1999)
Author: Keith Badman
Average review score:

Essential No Matter What
This is a great book. The research is fantastic. However some things are wrong with this book. There is a complete lack of an index, appendixes, and discographies. It is also somewhat annoyingly not a coffee table style book but shaped like a novel. There is some obvious events that are missing and some dates are incorrect. Not to mention some are pretty much irrelevant. Also, it starts on April 1, 1970(the last day a Beatle [Ringo] recorded something on a Beatle Song)which is somewhat clever, but it should have started at sometime around August 1969, which as we all know was for the most when the real breakup occured. This may be a harsh opinion, but when it comes to Beatle books there is only one thing you can do and that My friends is to compare them to the Lewisohn books.

Great Addition to the Beatles' Story
First let me say what a wonderful book this is. I bought it thinking of it as a reference, but ending up reading it cover to cover. There are many stories that run through the book, John, Paul, George, and Ringo's lives, for sure, but you can also follow the legal cases (I never knew Apple records sued Apple Computers, and got an undisclosed settlement!), the tours, the press bickering and the love fests in the press.

I found the organization exceptional. While an index would have been nice (maybe for future editions), I didn't really need it. My favorite activity while reading this book was to follow various threads from entry to entry. So, when John wrote a letter to Melody Maker, that is noted and you are directed to the subsequent dates to find out the response, etc. I found this to be fun and engaging. All in all, a wonderful book.

What a great book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought this book was a great read!. Its researched with great detail & passion from a writer who knows his stuff. I'd love to meet the writer, as I imagine that he could talk for hours about the Beatles & you wouldn't get bored!.

Become A Recognized Authority In Your Field - In 60 Days Or Less
Published in Paperback by Alpha Books (15 December, 2001)
Author: Robert W. Bly
Average review score:

Become an Authority, but it may take time...
Robert Bly presents a sensible and engaging discussion of how to be (and be seen as) an authority in any field. The most useful piece of information in the book was the discussion of the differences between a "Guru" based website and a "Topic" based website. However, I was disappointed with the lack of a real, clear, preferably diagramatic, description of the second part of the title "...in 60 Days or Less." I think for most people, the admittedly terrific process he gives would take at least 9 to 12 months. But if you're on the verge of needing guru status, by all means, buy this book.

Differentiation is Key
I heartily recommend all of Bly's books--this one is no exception.

Bly rightfully points out that the difference between an authority (or as Bly puts it, "guru") and everyone else in a particular field is that one individual is perceived as the "expert" while the others remain...well, average. It isn't a matter of the guru knowing more. It's a matter of the guru establishing himself as an expert by using the simple strategies and techniques outlined in this book.

Gurus separate themselves from the pack and stand out as someone who is expert in their given vocation. And the truth is that this isn't that hard to do, really.

Bly covers everything you need to do to attain "Authority" or "Guru" status. He lays out in simple fashion what needs to be done. All you need is the desire to learn AND implement these steps.

If you want to increase your income and your prestige, get this book. You won't be sorry!

JUST WHAT YOU WANT
From Joe Catal. Author of: Telesales Tips From The Trenches.
I have several of Bly's books and like them all. This book covers everything you need to know to become an expert in your field. It's straight forward tip after tip. I've been trying to market my book different ways, (without spending thousands) doing it. And am slowly beginning a national campaign thru classifieds. (just one of the many ways to promote the book). Bly's ideas and knowledge in the field make this a must have book for anyone looking to promote themself. We'll written. Just read through it and choose what you feel would work best for your situation. Good Job Rob. Keep the good work up!
